Description	:	Zelpha was born September 25, 1915 to John and Josephine VanKirk at Ashby, Nebraska in the sand hills. As many families did during the time leading up to the depression, her family moved to find work, which brought her to Gregory SD at a young age. From there her family moved around South Dakota, where she attended many schools, but finally settled in Gregory where she met her husband of 65 years, Wayne Powell. Read More	Zelpha was born September 25, 1915 to John and Josephine VanKirk at Ashby, Nebraska in the sand hills. As many families did during the time leading up to the depression, her family moved to find work, which brought her to Gregory SD at a young age. From there her family moved around South Dakota, where she attended many schools, but finally settled in Gregory where she met her husband of 65 years, Wayne Powell. They were married May 29, 1933 and soon after were blessed with two sons, Virgil and Adrian. Zelpha and Wayne spent many happy days fishing, going to sales, and enjoying life. Together they set a wonderful example of marriage, love and family for generations to come. Zelpha was a warm and caring person of many talents. We all have our favorite memories: we will always remember her pheasant dinners, homemade pickles, kolaches, wonderful cookies and candies she sent every Christmas, dollies and quilts. She was often called upon to bake and decorate cakes for special occasions in the community. Zelpha also had a love of gardening and as she was approaching her 99th year, she was still helping with the garden at Silver Threads. Zelpha cultivated many close friendships and family bonds with her devoted letter writing and emailing and her love of baking and cooking. She prepared many meals and was often asked for her recipes, which prompted the creation of her cookbook of which there are now many copies. She stopped taking orders at 60 books that we know of. Many of us have also been blessed to receive one of her quilts. They are warm and beautiful just like she was. Zelpha worked in Gregory as a cook at the school, dental assistant for Dr. McMeen, and supervisor of the kitchen and housekeeping at the hospital and nursing home. Zelpha is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Powell; her parents, John & Josephine VanKirk; her sisters, Violet Olson and Lorene Gormley. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home 101 Gerkin Gregory, SD
