Description	:	Zenas B. John was born in West Liberty, Iowa, on February 19th, 1871 and died in this city on November 13th, 1907, aged 36 years, eight months and twenty-four days. John was born in West Liberty, Iowa, on February 19th, 1871 and died in this city on November 13th, 1907, aged 36 years, eight months and twenty-four days. He lived in West Liberty until eight years ago when he came to Newton. On August 3rd, 1904 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Emma Fox. His wife and two sons, Walter and Robert survive him. He leaves besides these his father, Z.W. John and a sister, Miss Ada John who resides at 418 South Farmer street, his sisters, Mrs. Charles A. Bancroft, of Durand, Illinois, and Miss Cora John of Ashton, Illinois. The deceased was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America Camp No. 485 located at West Liberty. He was a man who was respected and trusted by his friends and fellow-workmen, and sad indeed is the home which is now bereft of his protection and care. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church, Rev. W.P. Stoddard, the pastor officiated. The music was furnished by Earnest Earley, who sang "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God To Thee" was sung by the members of the local Modern Woodmen of America, who attended in a body. The bearers were Leon Quaintance, Frank Shields, Fred Jorgensen, David Conn, Chas Schaumburg and Will Windrom. Many beautiful flowers were brought and sent in memory of the one who had come to his death under such sad circumstances. Among these were beautiful floral pieces from the West Liberty Woodmen Camp of which he was a member, the M.W. of A. local camp, employees of the Parsons Band Cutter and Self Feeder factory, work men employed at the new high school building and from the children in the school where his little son, Walter, attends. Those present from out of town to attend the funeral were Mrs. M.P. Wickersham and daughter, Bernice, of Des Moines, Mrs. C.A. Bancroft, of Durand, Illinois, Miss Cora John, Ashland, Illinois, Ed John and wife, Brooklyn, W.R. John and son, Harry, West Liberty, and George Embree of West Liberty. The Newton Daily News, Tuesday Evening, Nov. 19, 1907 An accident occurred at the new high school building late yesterday afternoon, which brought sorrow to many and the deepest grief to one home. It was just twenty minutes to five when word was brought into the building that a couple of men at work in the sewer east of the building had been buried in the ditch. Immediately workmen were set to work to dig them out. When the heads of the men were uncovered, it was found that one of them men, Bert Johns, was dead. The head of Clarence Bannister was uncovered in ten minutes from the time the accident occurred, but it was as long again before the dirt was removed from the head of Johns. In thirty minutes time Bannister was taken out and he was placed in the bus and taken to his home, where, although it was found that he had sustained a number of bruises, it was not thought that he is seriously hurt. Mr. Johns' body was not taken from the ditch for an hour after the disaster. The ditch where the men were working was eight feet deep and they were about four feet apart. The dirt came in from the side of the ditch and covered them up. The physicians who were at the scene of the accident just after the men's heads were uncovered state that undoubtedly Mr. Johns' death was caused from suffocation. Mr. Johns several years ago was a clerk at the Burns Grocery Store. While working there he had a stroke of paralysis. After recovering from the shock, thinking that it would be beneficial and that he would regain his health, he took up other work. When laid off a week or two ago at the Feeder Works, he began work at the high school building, and only for a day and a half had been employed on the sewer. Tuesday evening he was talking with his wife about going back into the building to work in a few days and seemed so glad to think that he was to have steady work at good wages.
