Additional acres were added in 1884 and 1892. This farm has been in the Leinen family ever since the original purchase. Zeno has lived on this farm all but six years of his life and has operated that farm for 42 years. Zeno is the son of Peter M. and Anna Ohlinger Leinen who were pioneers of Cass Township. Viola is the daughter of Melchior and Theresa Klein Schwery. They were descendants of German immigrants and settled in Shelby County near Panama. Zeno's family numbered twenty including six half~brothers and sisters. Viola is from a family of twelve children. Zeno attended the parochial school in Portsmouth and Viola was a student in a rural school in Washington Township and the parochial school in Panama. Mr & Mrs. Leinen were married February 4, 1931, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Panama. Their wedding dance that night was the first wedding dance in the new parish hall there. They are the parents of nine children, namely: Ursula Leinen Bruck who married Mike Bruck on January 12, 1954; James who married Dorothy Pauley on July 17, 1956; Orville who married Kathleen Schmitz on Oct. 3, 1959; Harvey who married Charlotte Kremer on May 7, 1960; Eunice Leinen Blum who married Ralph Blum on June 10, 1957; Verlee Leinen who teaches school in Valdez, Alaska; Mildred Leinen Brus who married Jerry Brus on August 24, 1968; Linda Leinen Daoust, who married Mark Daoust on JuLy 8, 1972, Zita Leineri Smith who married Gaylen Smith on June 20, 1970. Mr. and Mrs. Leinen are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Portsmouth. Zeno is an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, Earling Council. Viola is a member of Catholic Daughters of America and Rosary Society and is also a past 4~H leader of the Cass Sunny Sues. Zeno is a pioneer in soil conservation methods in Cass Township and was among the first farmers to put in terraces there. On February 4, 1931, he was united in marriage to Viola M. Schwery at St. Mary's Church, Panama, Iowa. She is the daughter of the late Meichior and Theresa (Klein) Schwery and she was born January 31, 1909. There are nine children in the Leinen family; Ursula Leinen Bruck (1932);James (1933); Orville (1934); Harvey (1936); Eunice Leinen Blum (1937); Verlee (1941); Mildred Leinen Brus (1944); Linda Leinen Daoust (1946); Zita Leinen Smith (1950). Zeno was a lifelong farmer. He lived on the farm that had been the Peter M. Leinen homestead. He and his wife are now retired and they moved into Portsmouth several years ago.
