Zola was born on a cold and wintry day, December 21, 1919 in a little house in Rosetown, Saskatchewan Canada. Happy parents of the little girl were James E. and Blanch (Huffman) Burge. After her dad, James, became ill with tuberculosis in 1923 the family moved to San Bernardino, CA. While Blanch worked at various jobs, young Zola stayed with her dad and would share the earphones of a little crystal radio and listen for hours. Following James’ death in 1926, Blanch and Zola moved back to Saskatchewan and Blanche married R. Allen Duncan in 1927. There, Zola grew up on the Duncan farm located one mile west of the Rosetown cemetery. She enjoyed watching her mother sew and father work the fields in the summer and curl in the winter. Crops were bountiful in the 1920’s and the family moved from their original two room house into a new farm home with two bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and full basement with a big furnace and indoor chemical toilet so they wouldn’t have to run to the out house on those cold and windy winter days. Then the “dirty 30’s” arrived, the rain stopped and the dust blew nearly every day. After the dust storms it remained dry and then grasshoppers and armyworms came. It was a rough time of farming. After graduating from the Rosetown schools in June 1937, Zola left for Portland, OR to study and take up nursing. From there she went to Pasadena, CA where she married Robert Naylor in 1939. The couple had two children; Sally born in July of 1940 and Robert born in October 1941. Zola and Robert separated in 1942 with her later moving to Regina, Saskatchewan to take a Laboratory Technician curriculum and work at Grey Nun’s Hospital. Sally and Bob stayed with their grandparents, Allen and Blanch in Rosetown while Zola received the education and worked in Regina. After the war was over in 1945, Zola returned to Rosetown and rented a house in town. She worked as a Lab and X-ray Technician in Dr. Gordon’s office. Following the Dr’s heart attack, Zola and the two children moved to Clear Lake, SD in February 1949. She accepted a position as Technician in the new Deuel County Memorial Hospital that opened on May 15th, 1949. She would serve there as the hospital’s only x-ray and medical technician for the next 32 years; usually on call 24/7. In the early years of the hospital, she also assisted with surgeries and births and did the bookkeeping. In 1952, Zola married Glen Rook and later in the year they had a boy, Jim. They, Sally, Bob and Glen’s son, Terry, lived in two different homes in Clear Lake prior to moving to a farm one mile north of Clear Lake in 1956. In 1958 they moved to the Hoitsma farm, west and north of Clear Lake where they farmed until the fall of 1960 when they moved to the Eugene Erickson farm located in the Hidewood valley. There they continued to rent the farm until the fall of 1966 when they purchased the Bernard Krause farm in Havana township. There they would live and operate the farm until it was sold in 1980. Glen and Zola then purchased the 9th Street home in Clear Lake where she continued to live and reside until her death. Things that were considered by Zola to have been notable during her lifetime included her vegetable and flower gardens, participation in Deuel County Extension Homemaker activities where she won many awards for her knitting, service on the D.C.M.H. advisory council and service on the Congregational Church Council for a number of years. Zola will be remembered by friends and family for all the bread, buns, caramel rolls, cookies and cakes she made over the years. Even up through age 90, she was insistent that she would bake and provide the homemade buns for most of the family gatherings, weddings, etc. Almost every one of the grandchildren of each generation has at least one knitted sweater or crocheted afghan made by Grandma Zola as a cherished keepsake. Zola was preceded in death by her parents, James E. Burge and Blanch Duncan; husband, Glen; son Robert Naylor; step-daughter Beverly (Howard) Goos; and grand-daughter Vicki Goos Chadwick. Survivors include daughter, Sally (Alfred Jr.) Reichling of Nunda, SD; sons, Terry (Minnie) Rook of Clear Lake, SD and Jim (Susan) Rook of Alexandria, MN; and daughter-in-law Meta Naylor of Azalea, OR. She was also survived by 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren. - Houseman-Birk Funeral Home
