She was born December 24, 1913, in Benton County Iowa near Mount Auburn to Perry and Grace Simmons Abbott. She married Keith Merle Carstedt in 1944 in Grundy Center, Iowa. She received her teachers certificate from the State Teachers College of Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA. She had taught in the Benton County, Iowa “country schools” from 1932 to 1944 and had taught 5th Grade in the Beaman-Conrad Consolidated School District for nearly 20 years. She had been a member of the Whitten United Methodist Church. Zorah was an enthusiastic gardener, she was a passionate writer of poetry which she held privately, when she moved to Texas in 1995, she babysat her great-grandchildren and again found a pleasing sense of purpose where she could continue to care for and teach children. Zorah loved to travel and visit family; she looked forward to caring for her nephew Richard Abbott when he had the opportunity to visit and was comfortable when she retired to assisted living in 2005. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Carstedt and Patty Conner of Austin, TX, brother, Lester Abbott of Anamosa, IA, grandchildren, Nicola Schaefer of Prairie Lea, TX and Jennifer Carstedt of Phoenix, AZ, great-grandchildren, Garrett, Nicholas and Kaytlyn Schaefer of Prairie Lea, TX and adoring former daughter-in-law Maxine Carstedt.
