The total number of burials is unknown, in this abandoned and lost cemetery; but the body of David Abbot was said to be about the last burial here in 1822 (unless his wife was later buried here about 1849). But this cemetery probably still contains the graves of many settlers who died between 1810 and 1822 within the immediate area of this specific section of old "Avery Township"(now called Milan Township). By 1858, this cemetery had already become neglected, and overgrown with weeds/brush. The precise location of ABBOT'S CEMETERY, is not recorded, but it was within the boundaries of the original, and very large, Abbot farm, and on the eastern side of the Huron River. This cemetery is said to have been "behind the old County Seat"; this may actually refer to the David Abbot home, which was nicknamed "the old County Seat" due to the use of his home as the first courthouse here, in 1815. The David Abbot house stood on the knoll on the east side of "Abbot's bridge" on Old Mason Road. Or instead, "old County Seat" in this instance, might have been a reference to the true village* plat, which was laid-out upon a small portion of the original Abbot farm. But this entire village, was abandoned shortly after the "Seat" was moved to Norwalk about 1818. [At that time, this township was within old Huron County; but it is now in Erie County, with the current 'seat' being at the city of Sandusky, OH.] If perhaps the cemetery was somewhere behind the David Abbot home, this cemetery may have been finally bulldozed out when the new Mason Road "by-pass" (and new bridge) was built after 1969. Or it is also possible that in the 1800s this cemetery was completely buried beneath the elevated bed of the nearby "high-bridge railroad", if the cemetery was anywhere in its direct path. However, it is possible that this cemetery still exists somewhere in the near vicinity of the David Abbot homestead, and so perhaps the headstones are simply broken and buried under a few inches of dirt as a result of over 175 years of neglect. [-This "old County Seat" village, briefly inhabited from 1814 until about 1822, was officially named "town plat of Huron", or simply "Huron Village", which is not to be confused with the current village of Huron, Ohio, that was established about 1824 after the demise of this "old County Seat" village also named "Huron" (but never named "Avery" as some local-historians have asserted. Instead, "Avery" was the prior name for this entire township, but not the original name for this village. 'Avery' is, however, the current name of the former village of "Spears Corners" to the west).]
