Read More	The history of All Saints Church is inextricably linked to the fortunes of the Trafford family―an ancient family with roots extending back before the time of the Norman conquest. Following the English Reformation, the public role of the Trafford family, because of their Catholic faith, became severely constrained. With the loosening of these restrictions in the 18th and 19th centuries, the family came to play a more visible role in their support of the Catholic faith. In 1792, a mission was founded from the Trafford Chaplaincy, which saw the construction in 1805 of a chapel at the family's seat, Trafford Hall. That chapel was soon replaced in 1816 by a larger "barn chapel", so-called by virtue of the fact that it did not specifically look like a church and was therefore deemed acceptable to authorities. The church, which was located on Redclyffe Road, was dedicated to All Saints. The passage in 1829 of the Roman Catholic Relief Act, removed nearly all remaining substantial restrictions on the public life of Roman Catholics. In 1822, the cornerstone of a school connected to the Trafford mission was laid in Eccles and in the following year, a burial ground for Catholic congregants was established nearby at Peel Green Road. The barn chapel remained in use until 1865 when Sir Humphrey de Trafford commissioned the renowned architect, E. W. Pugin, to design and build today's church in the Gothic Revival style. It opened in 1867. Construction of the Manchester Ship Canal in the 1880s contributed to cutting off All Saints from its congregation. The church suffered from years of neglect and in 1960, responsibility for the local parish was transferred to Patricroft's Holy Cross church. Soon thereafter, the Order of Friars Minor Conventual took over the Church and Presbytery. Beginning in the 1990s, extensive restorations on the church were undertaken, including work on the frescos in the sanctuary and other structural improvements. Apart from members of the de Trafford family, who are buried in the crypt of All Saints, the churchyard contains no graves. All internments recorded in the Burial Registry of All Saints Church are located in the graveyard at the Barton-upon-Irwell Roman Catholic Graveyard on Peel Green Road.
