Description	:	Part of Sultana and William Bell's homesteaded Platte County land was crossed by the Platte River. Oregon trail folk went from Independence, MO. Missouri along the Platte River to St. Joseph; and then they continued the Platte River across Nebraska country and beyond. Sultana's husband bought out her brothers' homesteads(Robert Riley Duncan and Perry A. Duncan went out the Oregon Trail). Missouri along the Platte River to St. Joseph; and then they continued the Platte River across Nebraska country and beyond. Sultana's husband bought out her brothers' homesteads(Robert Riley Duncan and Perry A. Duncan went out the Oregon Trail). When William Bell died 28 March 1846, he wes laid to rest in a small private cemetery on the Bell place. Eventually there were 50 or 8° graves there. . . In the early 1950's a new owner of the property then pulled up all the gravestones and piled them up against a fence and then had already plowed up the 5-acre private plot. Even some bones were upturned. "When I drove by the place and saw what had happened, I was sick. . . About 6 months later I heard that man had himself died. . And I said to myself—'That just serves him right, for plowing up my people. That 5 acres was not a part of his land." —Claire Masoner/Twyla Bledsoe When William Bell died, his personal belongings were all put up for sale at a court-decreed public auction. Sultana had to even buy back her own bedding, dishes, etc. (SEE: estate sale items sold, pg. ) William Bell died on March 28th, 1846 . On the following day his oldest gal married Jerome Arnold. Arnold was then able to force division of the total Bell plantation. (When a woman marries, whatever she inherits now becomes property of her husband). (SEE: land divisions—page ) After William Bell's death, the managing of the Bell lands fell to his oldest son, John T. Bell. . John probably bought one of the first machine McCormick reapers around. (SEE: pg. ) . . The Bells still had their slaves up into the 1850's. . They had to take "Alfred" to the courthouse steps to be sold, for he was stealing Bell's chickens. —Weir H. Bell The Bells kept their slaves in a row of little houses off from the main farm buildings. . One day the slaves decided to run away. All day long Sultana kept looking out the windows to see if they might have come back. Towards the end of the day sh« could see faces appearing now and then from the edge of the woods. Sultana went over to their houses and began cooking up an outdoor kettle over bonfire of quick-cooking oatmeal. When it was about done, she called out towards the woods "You must be getting pretty hungry. Come and get some good hot food before its bedtime." (John T.
