Description	:	Also known as The Portuguese Church, Murgihata, Calcutta in 1826 and "The Portuguese Church of the Virgin Mary of Rosary, Calcutta" in earlier publications, as well as "The Church of the Poor" Before the year 1700, a brick Chapel was erected in Calcutta at the expense of Mrs. Margaret Tench. Then enlarged in 1720 by Mrs. Sebastiana Shaw. The records of the old Chapel were destroyed in 1756. In 1798 the Portuguese decided to replace the old church with a new, more modern, larger church. Brothers Joseph and Luis Barretto were the driving forces behind the building of the new church.... Brothers Joseph and Luis Barretto were the driving forces behind the building of the new church. The first stone of the new church was laid March 12 1797 and on Nov 27, 1799, it was consecrated and dedicated to The Virgin Mary of Rosary. The architect was Thomas Syais Driver who died before the completion of the church. Current records and information will show the church was founded in 1799. Burials there prior to 1799 are indicative of the old, replaced church. The first identifiable burial of record is that of Mary Tench, daughter of Margaret and Edward Tench who funded the first brick chapel
