Description	:	Cormery Abbey (Abbaye Saint-Paul de Cormery) was originally founded as a priory by Ithier of St. Martin, abbot of the Basilica of St. Martin in Tours, in 791. When Alcuin of York came to prominence at St. Martin's, Cormery became an important Benedictine abbey, and the town grew up around it. With the advance of the Normans in the ninth century, the abbey was abandoned but was rededicated in 1054. In 1523, the community was affected by the Plague. In 1662, the community of St. Maur formed a monastic community at Cormery which lasted until the French Revolution.
