Description : The cemetery was developed by the Edinburgh and Leith Cemetery Company with architect, David Cousin. It opened on 20 September 1846 and was extended around 1880. In private ownership until about 1980, it was taken over by the City of Edinburgh Council. Within the grounds, is the Gretna Memorial which marks the mass grave of the 215 soldiers killed in the Gretna rail disaster in 1915.
