Description	:	Colonel Christopher Prince was a prominent early settler who owned several large farms in both Annapolis Township and Granville Township. Among them was one of the best and largest farms in Annapolis Township. Read More	Colonel Christopher Prince was a prominent early settler who owned several large farms in both Annapolis Township and Granville Township. Among them was one of the best and largest farms in Annapolis Township. Located on the site of Belliveau's Village, a former Acadian village, this farm was initially called "Belliveau Farm" but the name corrupted over time into "Bell Farm". Although he owned other farms, it was on "Bell Farm" that he resided most of the time. The farm was about 900 acres in size and very successful. He lived there until a few years after the arrival of the Loyalists. Among the Loyalists who first arrived was Robert Fitz Randolph Sr, who settled in Lawrencetown, situated in Wilmot Township, where many Loyalists were granted land. He lived in Lawrencetown for about five years until 1789. On October 23rd of that year, Robert purchased a 900-acre farm property, known as Bell Farm, for 1,050 pounds, according to a deed registered the following day in Book 8, page 214. He lived over 40 years on Bell Farm, until his death at the age of 93 years. It should be noted that the "Fitz Randolph Genealogy" erroneously states that Bell Farm was located in "Wilmot near Bridgetown" and, unfortunately, that error has been widely disseminated. The farm is near Bridgetown, on the south side of the Annapolis River in Carleton Corner, but that is not in Wilmot Township. It is in Annapolis Township and there is ample documented evidence of this. In addition to the aforementioned deed, the following excerpt from the Last Will and Testament of Robert Fitz Randolph Sr, who died in 1831, should put to rest the idea that Bell Farm was located in Wilmot Township: "I give and devise to my son Joseph Fitz Randolph and his heirs forever, all my farm which I purchased of Colonel Christopher Prince situate in the Township and county of Annapolis known by the name of Bell Farm with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging." It was on "Bell Farm" that the family cemetery was created. The property was in the Fitz Randolph family for 100 years, spanning four generations, until Samuel Fitz Randolph sold the property on April 16, 1890 to two young men from Cornwallis named Powers. The property changed hands at least twice more until it came into the possession of Rupert Bent on May 6, 1896. It was while in the possession of Rupert Bent that the farmhouse burned down in frigid cold weather on December 9, 1902. With one exception, all of the headstones have been found along the eastern treeline of the field. The exception is Robert Fitz Randolph, whose headstone is located at the southern tip of a line of trees that runs down the middle of the field. Only one GPS can be entered on the map here at Find a Grave, which pinpoints the location of the headstones along the eastern treeline. The other location at the southern tip of the middle line of trees is located at GPS coordinates: 44.82569, -65.29384 The first known survey of this cemetery was done by noted genealogist Dr. Allan E. Marble on August 6, 1980. Per his usual procedure, he did not give the cemetery a name but instead assigned it an identifying number. For this cemetery, the number was 134. He recorded the location as Carleton Corner. Dr. Marble transcribed 2 headstones containing 2 inscriptions. The oldest identifiable stone he surveyed was from 1826, that of Robert Fitz Randolph Jr. It is not clear why he did not record the other stones in this cemetery. At a later date, Genweb volunteers transcribed Dr. Marble's survey notes and made them available online at Rootsweb. At that time, the volunteers named it "Carleton Corner Cemetery" but, in the cemetery index, they listed the name simply as Carleton Corner. They recorded the location as Carleton Corner. The Rootsweb listing includes a memorial for Josiah Dodge. In fact, Josiah Dodge was not surveyed in this cemetery by Dr. Marble, so why did the Genweb volunteers post him here? Josiah Dodge is actually buried in "Joseph Phinney's Pasture Cemetery" in Upper Granville, the only gravestone at that location. The next survey was done in May 2010 by cemetery researcher, Denise J. Rice. She recorded and photographed 8 headstones along the eastern treeline of the farm. She also noticed several footstones but did not record them. However, she was not told about the headstone for Robert Fitz Randolph Jr, so she did not record that one. Hank Coyler, the owner of the farm since 1967, told her that some headstones were moved to Riverside Cemetery sometime before he bought the farm. An investigation is underway to try to determine which stones were moved. A decade later, cemetery investigator, Steve Skafte, recorded and photographed all the same headstones in this cemetery, plus the one for Robert Fitz Randolph Jr and one of the footstones. His photos have been added to this Find a Grave cemetery. DIRECTIONS: This cemetery is located on the south side of Highway 201, on private land owned by Civic #4096. Introduce yourself at the house before visiting. Two locations. One along the eastern border of the field out back and the other at the southern tip of the line of trees running down the middle of the field.
