Description : Site of the Butterfield Stage route. Site of the Bascom Affair-Lt George BAscom had attempted to capture Cochise in order to exchange Cochise for Mickey Free who had been captured by Apaches-although not by Cochise group. Cochise killed four AMericans who had been captured; in retalation several of Cochise relations were hanged near the site where the Americans had been found and buried. This violence would lead to the Apache Wars. Reportably several Mexican teamsters and at least one other Butterfield employee were killed by Apaches near where the 4 americans were later killed.
