Those who lived east of the valley road, were buried at the cemetery Bierstadter, those from the west from the valley road to the nearest village were buried in Wiesbaden. In 1552/53 "plague victims" from Sonnenberg was rejected by both cemeteries. On this occasion Count Philip of Nassau had Sonnenberg establish their own cemetery. The cemetery was created in 1553 at its present location attached to an existing chapel. The origin of the Holy Cross Chapel is still a mystery. Remains of the Romanesque style, give evidence of early construction, the development is at least the 15th Century thought. It served from 1620 to 1685 served as the parish church to the Protestant population of Sonnenberg. The background for this is that the valley church, built in 1429, at the beginning of the 30-year war was mismanaged down to uselessness. A report from that time tells you that when the wind blew through the valley and church, communion wafers were swept from the altar. In 1685 the valley church was restored and so the Holy Cross Chapel was no longer used and allowed to fall into disrepair. Demolition was begun in 1730 but due to a lack of money needed to complete the project, the chapel was preserved as a ruin. While the cemetery is extremely old, there are few old memorials that survive. This is due to the German custom of reusing the graves after a period of time if the lease is not renewed. Normal time is between 20 and 30 years before the grave site is cleared and reused.
