It is one of the most unique burial places in Germany. The church was originally built between 1894-1898 for the 20,000 Catholics living in the eastern part of Aachen. By 2004 the number of Catholics had dwindled down to about 6500 people. The St. Josef and St. Frohnleichnam Congregations had merged in 2005, therefore it became unnecessary to maintain two large basilicas.
