N40.48.771' and W 77.59.366' Gray's Cemetery has existed since soon after the families of Peter GraY and Conrad Hartsock settled in Halfmoon and Buffalo Run Valleys. No written documents remain, but at least four Revolutionary War Soldiers are buried there. The oldest standing stone is dated 1838. The cemetery contains over a thousand graves, many of which are marked by mountain stones. In August 1905, eleven citizens formed an Association Board to transact cemetery business. Seven trustees were elected from the board; Thomas Huey, Secretary; F. H.Clemson, W. G. Furst, J. H. Burket, Dr. S. C. Coons, J. G. Caron, and D. C. Harpster. J. G. Mattern was elected President for the organizational meeting. These trustees secured land adjacent to the "old cemetery" from Misses Nora and Annie Gray. The stock was sold to pay for the land, surveying, mapping, fence, and maintenance. A request for a charter made in December 1906 was granted by the court in January 1907. By-laws were adopted in May 1907 and were revised and approved in May 1990. In addition to the stocks, money was raised with festivals, letters to families suggesting perpetual care, or yearly payment for care. Since 1959 all the grace sites have been sold with perpetual care. The cemetery has expanded three times: first in 1906 with the purchase of land from the Grays; second in 1924 with adjacent land from Mr. Gummo; and third in 2000 with a gift of land extending the length of the cemetery from John and Vivial Zeek. The first paid caretaker was George T. Stine, who was hired at 12 ½ cents per hour. In 1930 his contract was $50.00 a month. Over the years at least 91 people have acted as trustees, some with three generations serving the Association. The current trustees are Paul Gibson, President; Edgar Gibson, Secretary; Phyllis Barr, Treasurer; John and Vivian Zeek, Merle and Doug Wilson, Mike Walker, Ronald Way, Charles Brewer, and Harry Houtz.
