Description : In February of 1845, the prospectus of a "Greenock Cemetery Company" was published and the cemetery established in 1846 as the expansion of the population of the town meant that the previous burial grounds (Inverkip Street & Duncan Street) were inadequate. The 31 hectare site (now believed to be one of the largest municipal cemeteries in Europe) was procured from Sir Michael Robert Shaw Stewart, 7th Baronet (who also provided the land for Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Home).
