During this era of the segregated South, this cemetery provided a burial option for this community, as prior, churchyards had been the primary location for burials. Over the years, the promise of perpetual care was broken causing a serious decline of this cemetery that started in the early 1960’s. By the 1990’s, there was no one to care for the cemetery; hence the cemetery became overgrown with weeds that were knee high. Trash such as beer cans, gin bottles and equipment for drug-use was littered by homeless people living in the cemetery. As the professionals abandoned this inner-city neighborhood for the suburbs, the incidence of crime became high especially in Greenwood Cemetery. No one would accept the huge responsibility of maintaining this cemetery as they would also be responsible for years of back taxes owed to the county and the city. At this point, no one was there to protect the living visiting their loved one’s grave or protect the last resting place of the dead in Greenwood Cemetery. Open graves with broken vaults and exposed caskets filled with filthy rainwater and bones could be easily found. It is not a safe environment. For all these reasons, doing a cemetery survey and taking grave photographs can be challenge and a dangerous risk. With the earliest burials dated mid-1920s, the cemetery is still active. At times, the only documentation of a burial in Greenwood Cemetery is a funeral home record, an obituary, or a death certificate; hence the actual site of the numerous unmarked graves remains unknown. The issuing of a military marker documents some of the burials here even if the marker cannot be located in the cemetery due to soil or trash covering the marker. The bronze military marker could have easily been stolen for the value of the metal. In recent years, family and friends of those buried here started some restoration of the cemetery with limited funds and manpower. The city, using taxpayer’s money, has done some basic trash removal and mowing. This cemetery is near the Duval County Pauper Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Memorial Cemetery, Sunset Cemetery and the Pinehurst Cemetery; this area of Jacksonville is called the “Moncrief Cemetery District” with an estimate of at least 10,000 poorly-kept graves.
