The WPA recorded its location with 1940’s driving directions; however, the true location was misunderstood over the years due to inaccuracies in the deeds and property descriptions. Fortunately, oral histories, obituaries and ledgers have recorded the existence of this burial ground. By checking obituaries, death certificates and funeral records some of those who are buried in this cemetery have been identified. A spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp Kirby Smith in Jacksonville, FL has reported that this cemetery was also used as a burial ground for a number of Confederate soldiers who died in the skirmishes at Broward's Neck, Yellow Bluff Fort and New Berlin. It has also been speculated that many north Duval County victims of Yellow Fever of the late 1880's are buried there as well. Based on the dates of the known burials, the cemetery was active for about 60 years, but it is probable that burials started earlier than 1864 , maybe even before Florida’s Statehood in 1845, and continued until the late 1930's or 1940's. This cemetery could have been used for 100 years and has now been abandoned and forgotten for 60 to 90 years. When I-95 was routed through north Duval County in the1960’s, an old road was moved; thus the community lost this important landmark. Thankfully several old-timers still remembered and inspired a search to locate it for future preservation. On Sunday, March 10, 2013 the cemetery was located on private property in the woods off Harts Rd near the Broward River. Many, many more burials than initially estimated were found with sequential rows in a rhythmic pattern of shallow pits where the ground sunk as a result of the rotted wooden coffins. There are neither headstones nor any evidence of any; this may have been a pauper cemetery. Often in Florida, markers were made of wood instead of stone. At least one mounded area could have been a mass grave.
