Hamilton Square Methodist Episcopal Churchyard The former Methodist church building is on the north side of Nottingham Way, 0.1 mile west of the old village center. The graveyard was located inconspicuously behind the church. ... The church was built in 1844 and considerably enlarged in 1874. The churchyard was first used for burials in 1865. In 1956 the need for parking space prompted church officials to have all gravestones buried in the churchyard, which subsequently was paved over; the property later was sold. Only two Civil War soldiers' stones remain; they now stand at the far edge of the yard, some distance from the actual gravesites. The paved-over graveyard received newspaper publicity in 1993-94 during the sale of the property to the First Pentecostal Church. A memorial list identifying 67 persons buried here hangs in the library of the successor St. Mark United Methodist Church, 465 Paxson Avenue, Hamilton Square. A church historian stated that date and age information for those interred was not copied, and names could not be obtained from additional stones which were excessively eroded. Note: Despite the statement above that interments in the churchyard began in 1865, there are several burials in this location from earlier years--at least back to 1851. These are known from a list of the graves made prior to the paving over of the burial ground. It would appear, then, that the use of the site as a cemetery goes back quite a few years earlier and potentially to the building of the church in 1844.
