There is a cairn with the names of 124 people who were buried here between 1896 and 1929. The need for a house of industry or refuge had been discussed by County Council some years before any building was erected. Those who were unfortunate enough to have no family or means to care for them, whether very old or very ill, were often placed in the "gaol" at Goderich. There was never enough staff to care for them leaving those who were not so ill to help in caring for those who were. This method of housing such people was not at all satisfactory; it left less room to house actual prisoners for whom the Gaol had been erected in the first place. Mr. and Mrs. D. French of Exeter, one of50 applicants, were selected to be superintendent and Matron of this new home. Three of the very first inmates were Sarah Lee, from Brussels, Donald Ballantyne, from Bayfield and Wesley Sutton of Exeter. At some point this home was dubbed "castle French", no reason for the name was found, other that the reference to Mr. and Mrs. French. Most reports indicated the residents were well treated and each was expected to share in the workload of the fann and home itself. The farm was quite self-sufficient. The first death was that of John Sadler of Wingham, on the fifth or sixth of February 1896, taken to Wingham for burial. His brother Edward also a resident was later buried in the Home cemetery. The sixth death was William Rae of Ashfield about the 14th of May 1896, "burial was in the plot selected for the purpose on the farm." The medical needs were looked out for by a Clinton doctor and the clergymen of Clinton took turns caring for their spiritual needs. By 1929 the House of Refuge committee, of County Council, favoured the idea of better quarters for burial for those having no means for providing for their own burials. Clinton cemetery was chosen as a replacement. From Exeter Times Advocate of June 1931 the following was extracted; "As the use of the Home cemetery has been definitely discontinued and as there are about 120 graves there, all without headstones and as the place is in rather neglected condition, on the motion of Mr. Geiger, seconded by Mr. Craigie, it was decided to enclose the burial ground, level same and erect a suitable memorial with names engraved and that the place receive perpetual care." From the same publication IO December 1931: "County council report Mr.Govenlock reported the fencing of the cemetery, that it had been leveled off and seeded down, a cairn built and tablet inscribed with the names of those buried there From the Zurich Herald June 23,1949; 'The County Home committee of the Huron County council authorizing the purchase of a block df lots in Clinton cemetery for residence of the Home who have no relatives nor designated place of burial. This action was taken in order to insure that perpetual care would be given, and that the last resting place of the aged people would be insured against neglect." In October of 1998 the original cairn of the County Home was destroyed. After much controversy a new cairn and fence was erected in the original spot.
