Description	:	This cemetery is across the street from San Luis Catholic Cemetery. It serves as the morada for the Penitentes. The cross on the front of the building reads "NUESTRO PADRE JESUS DE NAZARENO", and the building fits the description of a Morada that would be in use in New Mexico, beginning in the early 19th century. Following Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Church authorities in Mexico withdrew the Franciscan, Dominican and Jesuit missionaries from its provinces, replacing them with secular priests. Following Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Church authorities in Mexico withdrew the Franciscan, Dominican and Jesuit missionaries from its provinces, replacing them with secular priests. They did not replace the missionaries with an equal number of priests, depriving many secluded communities of a resident clergyman. Accordingly, many of those small communities could expect only a once-yearly visit from a parish priest. The men in those communities eventually came together in the absence of a priest and dedicated themselves to the purpose of providing mutual aid, community charity and to memorialize the spirit of the penance and the Passion of Christ. Lacking priestly ordinations they built separate meeting houses, Moradas. The cemetery is about half an acre. There appears to be about two acres that comprise the two buildings, cemetery, and other land. When we visited in May 2020, the oldest readable date of death was in 1937, although as is typical with many rural cemeteries in New Mexico, there is evidence of many more interments that have lost their markings and identity to time and the elements. The more recent interments are along the inside perimeter of the fences, which supports the assumption there are many more interments. A well-kept pipe fence and gate is along the front. There is another pipe fence and gate along Old Highway 279. You can park off the road and walk the 50 yards (or so) to the cemetery.
