Stocker, 1887, p. 533: LOCUST HILL AND VICINITY - Jonas Brush, formerly of Litchfield, Connecticut, his oldest son, Jonas Brush Jr., was the first settler on Locust Hill, in Great Bend township, about 1812, where he spent his life and reared a large family of children. Mrs. Doctor Charles Fraser and Mrs. Charles Avery, of Montrose, were all of Henry Lord's family that remained in the county] --- The Locust Hill Cemetery is a small cemetery which has not had a burial in more than 85 years. From headstone data, the death year range is 1855 to 1927. This cemetery is located within a clump of trees with most stones broken and weathered making them almost impossible to read. The backgrounds for all occupants eventually associate with each other. Possibly the Locust Hill Cemetery was a family burial lot. The headstone name list used to create these Find A Grave memorials was a combined effort. One contributor of an unknown source, and the other from "Family Foundations, Etched in Stone", a book written by Janet S. Bennett Belcher. Added to their findings were other names acquired from searching local newspapers of funeral notices with their interment referenced as Locust Hill Cemetery. The names provided in this Find A Grave database is as complete of a feasible listing due to the number of buried and/or broken stones. If records once existed for burials in this cemetery, they are no longer available. At the time for creating this cemetery text, there are five known CIVIL WAR Veterans, all with rank of "Private": - Alexander J. Brown - John Henry Burleigh - Albert O. Fox - Hiram T. Gray - David Gilbert Lane From PA Route 171, traveling east from Great Bend towards Susquehanna, at Hickory Grove turn left onto Route 1025. At the left turn for Locust Hill Road, T755, this cemetery is physically located between that turn off and Rt. 828, and before the New York State boundary. Due to its camouflage by trees and heavy brush growth, this cemetery is NOT visible from the road. The known headstone surnames associated with this cemetery are: - Brown - Burleigh - Burley - Colwell - Fairchild - Fox - Freeman - Gray - Hawkins - Knapp - Lane - McKinney --- NOTE: Please do not submit photo requests for the cemetery sign nor any of its headstones. This cemetery has been in severe neglect for decades. Information used to create this Find A Grave memorial was obtained from a 1978 cemetery headstone read. By now any of the referenced stones may no longer exist in legible format, or are no longer above the ground's surface.
