Its back barrier is near the border for the Lanesboro Cemetery, a cemetery of many denominations. This graveyard was established alongside the original Saint John's Catholic Church. Today it is just a graveyard where the church was removed to the next town. Shortly after the town was established as Lanesboro, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, the Methodist Episcopal Church was built. Two decades later, in 1847, the Saint John's Catholic Church was originated. Before the church was built, Father O’Reilly frequently visited the locality and celebrated mass in several private houses of: Dennis McDonald, Henry Williams and John Larkin. Stephen Maroney, a young man then in the employ of the railroad company, assisted in service mass at these places. Later in 1847 the Saint John's church was erected. It was two stories high, the upper part being used for a school and stood on the upper side of the road, diagonally opposite the Lanesboro Graded School (built later in the 1800's). Today’s “Rotorcast Company” is seated on the grounds for what used to be the Graded School. Ten years after the New York and Erie Railroad was built, in 1858 the Lanesboro Catholic church building was dismantled and moved to Susquehanna. There it was re-erected for use as a school until about 1876, known as the Laurel Hill Academy. Prior to removal of the building from Lanesboro, a framed church was erected in Susquehanna in 1853, seating almost 800 people. While in Susquehanna the church organization grew strong. The population of Susquehanna was now much larger than Lanesboro due to the Erie Shops having been built. The shops themselves, in 1860, were the largest in the world. In Susquehanna the church chose to not have a graveyard and instead established a cemetery at the top of Laurel Hill. It is known today as Saint John's Cemetery, sometimes referred to as Laurel Hill Cemetery. Within a few years the congregation was altogether too large for their church built in 1853. Plans were made to build a new and much larger church. It was dedicated in 1876, completed in 1880 at a cost of $42,000, and located on a scenic perch within Laurel Hill. For clarification, the original building remains in use today for what was the Lanesboro Methodist Episcopal Church, and is known today as the Lanesboro Community United Presbyterian Church, located along Main Street within the borough (opposite side of the road from where the Catholic Church once stood, and about 1/10 mile apart). --- On July 8, 1964, a local newspaper offered this background about the cemetery and church: "MONUMENT ERECTED IN LANESBORO CEMETERY" The members of the Lanesboro Catholic Club have worked very industriously for many years. Their latest accomplished is the placing of a monument, honoring and respecting the deceased members of St. John's Church. It is unlikely that many persons are aware that the cemetery ever existed n the Borough of Lanesboro. The first Roman Catholic Church in this vicinity was built in Lanesboro in 1847. It was located by the little old cemetery about the location of Smith, Cleveland & Smith garage.... The Rosary Society of Lanesboro, a branch of the large society of St. John's Parish at Susquehanna was a flourishing organization representing the interest of the church in the small community. Mrs. Thomas Luciana, one of the promoters in 1940, was acting chairman at the time. Is it said that there was a colony of French monks (French Catholic Missionaries) near the Cascade, and also that there was, at one time, a small French Catholic church on the now empty lot near the home of L. D. Jones. Mr. and Mrs. John Horrigan who lived at Cascade, grandparents of Dennis and Joseph Horrigan, attended this little church on the lot now owned by Mrs. Charles Llewellyn. Mr. Horrigan was buried in the little cemetery in Lanesboro across the road, eighty years ago. ---
