It is located on the old county road, now abandoned, that went along the ridge of the mountain, with an exit somewhere near the Hackett Notch cemetery on Rt. 27. In 1999, "THE FRIENDS OF THE NEW VINEYARD CEMETERIES" removed branches and small trees from the interior and braced the fallen stones against trees so they would not be lost. They also tied pink plastic tape to the trees around the perimeter. All but three of the stones were flat There were 15 in all, some may be foot stones as they are small. The stones are made of the native stone, probably slate, and some very ornately carved with weeping branches of trees with fine penmanship. This cemetery covers quite a large area with many holes where graves were dug up and removed to the Hackett Notch Cemetery, so town legend says. Most of the stones were flat on the ground and had obviously been moved around so there is no way of knowing where they were originally. Another theory of the holes is that the cemetery had been vandalized. There is no way to verify or disprove this theory. Of the 15 stones, 7 had markings on them. One, which reads, "H.M.L.", a possible footstone for "HEPHZEBAH M. LOOK" who’s stone is one of the ones ornately carved. Hephzabah was the daughter of Jonathan & Betsy Holley Look, who was born in 1807 and died in 1835, (Look Genealogy) one of 11 children. Her brothers, Jonathan, Jr. and William are buried in the Notch Cemetery Apparently, Jonathan and Betsy moved to North Jay, ca. 1822 as son Charles C., was born in N. Jay in 1822 and sons, Albert and Samuel after that. Albert died young. Jonathan died 4 April, 1850. They were married 2 June, 1799. Source: History of Jay by Virginia Moulton, P. 499. Published 1995. She states that Jonathan married Betsey Macomber who was b. 1781, d. 1858. Another stone had the initials “M.V. AET. 43” carved on it. This was a small stone. Another stone had "Mr.E.H. EAT. 80” and a crude 7 point star or wheel carved on it. I feel this may have been the original stone for Ephraim Hackett whose grave, supposedly, was moved down to the Notch Cemetery and a new stone carved with the initials of he and his two wives added, also a Revolutionary War symbol added. This is also of the native stone and rather crudely carved with AET., being spelled EAT. See Hackett Notch Cemetery listing.
