| Description | : | Machpelah Cemetery was the second oldest cemetery in Philadelphia, opening in the 1830s. When closed in the 1890s, there were 13,000 bodies to be re-interred. While some families had bodies removed to various Philadelphia area cemeteries, the majority were reburied in a mass grave in commingled boxes at Graceland Cemetery (https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2228166/graceland-cemetery). Graceland Cemetery is not and has never been part of the the nearby Mount Moriah Cemetery. There are scant records of subsequent burials at this location, and none known to exist from the removals from Machpelah to Graceland.
