Prior to 1905, the community was known by West Ferry. Also, some sources refer to the area as Mariner's Section (or by other variations, Mariners Section and Mariner Section). The O'Dell Museum in Annapolis Royal has a map of early school sections which shows this area's school section named Mariner's Section. And so it would appear that the cemetery derived its name from the name of the school section (at that time) in which it was located. However, the cemetery was not originally known by its current name. On 10 August 1993 a local researcher named Frank Taylor did a survey of the cemetery, which, at that time, was known as "Hayne's Cemetery". He was one of a group of dedicated citizens who cleared a path to the cemetery and cleared away the heavy overgrowth around the memorials. At this time, or perhaps later, the sign bearing the current name "Mariner's Section Burial Ground" was posted. Sadly, as years passed, the cemetery became neglected once again. When local cemetery researcher Denise J Rice visited the cemetery in 1998, it was once again heavily overgrown. Most headstones were no longer erect, lying flat on the ground. Because of the heavy overgrowth, she was not able to do a complete survey of the headstones. Another avid cemetery investigator, Steve Skafte, visited this cemetery in the Spring of 2021. He, too, found the cemetery overgrown and most of the stones damaged and down and covered with dirt. So, he set to work clearing the overgrowth and was able to photograph his headstone discoveries, which have been shared here at Find a Grave. He intends to return again later in 2021 to see if he can locate any additional headstones. DIRECTIONS: The cemetery is located on the south side of Granville Road. The path to enter is directly east of Civic #1708. The cemetery is down by the Annapolis Basin.
