The cemetery is located in Port Royal on private property that was known as Lot #2 on the Land Grant Map #21 for Granville Township. This 500-acre property first became associated with the Shafner family on December 19, 1780 when Richard Armstrong Sr purchased Lot #2 from Matthew Winniett. About three years earlier, Richard had taken as his wife, Catherine Shafner, daughter of Adam Shafner, a German immigrant who came to Nova Scotia about 1751. When the Loyalists arrived in the Valley in 1783, many of the earlier settlers sold out their properties in Granville and Annapolis Townships and removed to Wilmot Township. Richard and Catherine were among those who did so, selling Lot #2 in Granville to Catherine's brother, Ferdinand Shafner, on September 7, 1783. Ferdinand was buried in this cemetery, along with his wife, Barbara. All other headstones in this cemetery mark burials of descendants of Ferdinand and Barbara Shafner. Considerable confusion exists with regard to the spelling of the family surname. To be clear, all inscriptions in the cemetery bear the surname Shafner. Legal documents pertaining to individuals buried here, such as wills and deeds, primarily spell the surname as Shafner, but there are some exceptions, such as Shaffenor and Shaffner. Calnek, in his "History of the County of Annapolis", cites Schafner as the spelling for the entire family. Adding to the confusion is the cemetery's location. The community in which it is located is called Port Royal. Not too far to the west is the community of Karsdale. In the early days of English settlement of the area, this was all part of Granville Township. As time advanced and population grew, rural communities took shape in the township and this area became known as Lower Granville or the lower district of Granville Township. Still later, Lower Granville was divided into the current communities of Port Royal and Karsdale. In the community of Port Royal there is a geographical feature, a 'point' on the Annapolis River, on which a lighthouse was erected in 1885. Through the years the point has been known variously as Shafners Point, Shafner's Point, Shafner Point and Schafners Point. DIRECTIONS: The cemetery is located on the north side of Granville Road, on private land owned by Civic #3391. Permission must be given at the house before visiting. It is situated about 160 meters down an overgrown path that exits from the back of the yard.
