Read More	The old burial ground, a place of common reception for the dead in this neighborhood, is situated on the Southern limit of the borough of Saltsburg, on the banks of the Conemaugh River. When this spot was chosen, which we suppose was to be about 1800, it would have proven a convenient and not unpleasant resting-place for the dead. In the course of time, the surveys for the Pennsylvania canal traversed the bank of the river and the final location of this public improvement, penetrated the sacred spot, resulting in the exhumation of some of the bodies and rendering the place no longer untenable for the use to which it had been devoted. As in all old burial grounds, the living simply chose a spot in which to inter their dead, fencing it in to keep the cattle from desecrating it, there being little regard paid to uniformity, symmetry, or beautification. Two graves of all who were interred here in the early days, have been preserved with any indication of care, and they are surrounded by a small enclosure most aptly described in the following lines: " A winding wall of mossy stone, frost-flung and broken lines, a lonesome acre thinly grown with grass and wandering vines". The information above was taken from the Saltsburg Press news paper dated October 6, 1875. There are only two graves that the information was recorded. Over the years, development of this ground has caused the remaining gravestones to be lost. It is possible that the stones could be found in the town of Saltsburg. In 2019, a 92 year old man was interviewed and he said he remembered the old burial ground as a young boy. He stated that the graves had a cast iron fence around them. Now there is a water treatment plant at the location of the burial ground and no sign of any markers. ------------------------------ Transcription of Newspaper Article that includes a list of burials: Removing the Old Graveyard Thursday Aug 13, 1896 Indiana Democrat Following is the proceedings of the meeting held Friday evening by the proper authorities of the two churches in regard to the moving of the graves from the old graveyard. Last week we gave an account of what improvements were to be made and we have reason to believe that the project will be carried out, and that the grounds will be made beautiful. At the suggestion of the Borough Council the Boards of Trustees of the United Presbyterian and Presbyterian churches met jointly and passed a resolution requesting persons who have deceased relations and friends buried in the U.P. and Presbyterian church yards to remove them to some of the cemeteries or other burial grounds. The dilapidated and neglected condition of the graves and the grounds is anything but creditable to the town or the friends of those who remains lie in these churchyards. Should the friends in these church yards neglect or refuse to remove them, an application will be made to have them removed by due course of law. G.W. Simpson Pres. U.P Board Trustees W.A. At.
