Description : When Green Hill Cemetery was established in 1854, no African Americans were permitted to be buried in the main part of the cemetery. There was a section set aside on the east side of the cemetery where African Americans had been buried on the land before it was purchased by the Green Hill Cemetery. Slaves of the white owners were buried in this section and part of this area was used as a pauper cemetery. This section is located on the Green Hill Cemetery map.
