It began as a booming township made up of canvas tents, but as time went on more substantial buildings were constructed. At its peak the town had a hospital, post office, police station, stores and a hotel. After the gold rush Halls Creek continued as a small centre for commerce and trade, but once the highway was constructed, the decision was made to relocate the town. Old Halls Creek is now a picturesque ghost town, surrounded by undulating stony country. Today you can see the foundations of the old mine shaft where visitors can still pan for gold, sections of the old post-office, and the Pioneers Cemetery, which contains the graves of many Kimberley pioneers. == This is a very significant place. It is the site of the first gold discovery in Western Australia and where the WA gold rushes began. In 1885 Charles Hall found a 28-ounce nugget. The 'Golden West' had its beginnings in Halls Creek. This is the site of the original gold mining community where prospectors followed the gold up the creeks and gullies from Brockman to Old Halls Creek. The Halls Creek gold rush might have been short lived but it nevertheless left an important legacy. The gold strike contributed to the establishment of the Ports of Derby and Wyndham as well as the town of Halls Creek as men and mining equipment were brought in from places as far away as California. During the rush Old Halls Creek was a town of makeshift tents. After the gold was all but exhausted Halls Creek subsequently developed into a small centre for commerce and trade. At its peak the town boasted a Post Office, Hospital, Police Station, two stores and a hotel. The Royal Flying Doctors Memorial was erected at the Pioneer Cemetery for the 90th Anniversary.
