There are also some unmarked graves that are well-documented by deaths records in Bibles and oral family history. These match with about a dozen sunken grave sites in the cemetery. This cemetery was started by the pioneer families of Perry County, AL. Today, a little distance to the right of these old graves is a large active, but not well-kept African American cemetery. It is the Heard Cemetery and believed to be initially started with slave graves of the early 1800's. There is part of a brick wall with a gate post still standing. The cemetery is off SR #14 and somewhat difficult to find. As you leave SR #14, you must drive down an incline, go over a ditch on dirt lane, and all while missing low tree limbs. All of the graves in both cemeteries are in an overgrown area with trees, bushes and vines. Only one of the tombstones in the Old Heard Family Cemetery can be actually seen from the lane and the rest are in among trees and easily overlooked. According to land records dated 1830, this plot of land is just due west to Joseph Heard's, who migrated from Wilkes Co, GA and settled in Perry County. Joseph Heard served in the GA Militia during the War of 1812. He is believed to be buried here with his second wife, his descendants and allied family members. 100% of the tombstones in this cemetery have photos posted on Find A Grave. January 2015 update: The Heard Family Plot was destroyed by an ancient Oak tree that was CUT and fell directly into the plot. The part of the brick wall that once anchored a gate was destroyed. Both William and Phillip Heard's upright marker both were knocked to the ground. Elizabeth's foot stone was still in place untouched by the tree which had fallen over it. Sarah Cole's marker, which has stood upright for 194 years, was not harmed as it was far enough away from the fallen tree.
