Description : Ono Cemetery was a "Foreigners'" or International Cemetery as the Japanese would not allow them to be buried with the dead of the local population. During the bombing of Kobe by Allied forces on March 17, 1945, an area of three square miles were completely destroyed. On June 5 of the same year, Kobe was bombed again, destroying an additional 4.4 square miles. Ono Cemetery was one of the areas that was severely damaged. Some graves were lost. In the early 1950's it was decided to relocated all foreigners' graves to a new Foreigners' Cemetery, the Kobe Municipal Foreigners' Cemetery.
