| Description | : | Ōpihi Whanaunga Kore Urupa is a tranquil piece of land situated in the in the sand dunes of Whakatāne harbour. Sand dune burials were commonly practiced among tribes residing along the coastlines as it was easier to move sand than earth when one considers the tools of that time. The Opihi Urupa dates back 800 years and is the final resting place of local Ngāti Awa iwi and where local tribes of Mataatua buried their chiefs. The Opihi Urupa has unfortunately become a subject of conflict due to the local council's recent plans to develop it. |
