Description	:	Pleasant Union Cemetery is an community church cemetery with over 150 marked burials and an unknown number of unmarked burials. The cemetery is the largest African American cemetery in Mammoth Cave and dates from 1896 to 1922. The majority of the markers are fieldstone tablets with squared, rounded or peaked tops. If the fieldstones did not naturally have the desired shape, they have been hewn or blocked into preferred form. The cemetery is the largest African American cemetery in Mammoth Cave and dates from 1896 to 1922. The majority of the markers are fieldstone tablets with squared, rounded or peaked tops. If the fieldstones did not naturally have the desired shape, they have been hewn or blocked into preferred form. At least four of the fieldstones are inscribed and the rest are either unmarked or illegible. There is one commercial marker, an engraved marble tablet for Sarah Garvin. The tympanum motif is two hands shaking. Family names represented on the headstones are Brown, Garvin, Woodson and Doyle. Pleasant Union Cemetery is heavily wooded and covered with underbrush and ferns. The cemetery landscape includes a large oak, a pine, several maples, dogwoods and a periwinkle undergrowth. An old road bed runs through the cemetery, dividing it into two sections. According to oral testimonial, Pleasant Union was originally a family cemetery. Members of the community who did not have an individual family cemetery were also buried there and eventually it became a community church cemetery. The church at the site was razed by the Park Service in 1930s, but the foundations still exist. Prior to the creation of Mammoth Cave National Park the church and cemetery played a significant role in the community. From the Visitor Center take Flint Ridge Road, located across from the Hotel Parking lot. Follow the road approximately 1.6 miles until you reach a gated Park road next to water tanks. This is Great Onyx Road. Park here in the entrance being sure not to block the gate. Using a compass and a map, set the compass to 220 degrees and hike approximately .25 miles into the park. Though the cemetery is large, visibility is low until you are right on it. The commercial marker of Sarah Garvin is the most visible feature of the cemetery.
