Description	:	The Punakitere Settlers Cemetery opened about 1887 and officially closed 1966. The Punakitere Settlers Cemetery is located on private property. It is situated on a hillside, on the right-hand side of the Main Opononi-Kaikohe Road (State Highway 12) approaching Taheke from Kaikohe. It is about 2 km before the road that turns off to Horeke, about 3 km before the Taheke Hotel is reached. Burials included Roman Catholic, Wesleyan, Presbyterian, and Anglican. Read More	The Punakitere Settlers Cemetery opened about 1887 and officially closed 1966. The Punakitere Settlers Cemetery is located on private property. It is situated on a hillside, on the right-hand side of the Main Opononi-Kaikohe Road (State Highway 12) approaching Taheke from Kaikohe. It is about 2 km before the road that turns off to Horeke, about 3 km before the Taheke Hotel is reached. Burials included Roman Catholic, Wesleyan, Presbyterian, and Anglican. Burials were recorded as buried at: 1) Taheke, 2) Punakitere, 3) Punakitere Cemetery, 4) Land of Mr. Proctor at Taheke. The Punakitere Cemetery burial books were last seen in 1966 when in the possession of the cemetery custodian. They have not been seen since. History: Robert Proctor, owner of section 3 of Block 1 at Punakitere situated across the Punakitere River on the main road opposite the Punakitere settlement, donated a small portion of his property around 1887 to be used as a private cemetery for infant children of settlers to the area. This later became an official public cemetery after the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands visited the area in February 1890. (The original access to the Punakitere Cemetery was likely at Proctor's eastern side where 3453 State Highway 12, Taheke is today). The Punakitere settlers cleared the cemetery without destroying the nikaus, tree ferns and other ornamental vegetation and they planted totaras on the corner boundaries to make an attractive, private burial ground. After the last burial (abt 1955), the Punakitere Settlers Cemetery turned into a lost cemetery. It became overgrown with weeds and was forgotten. Abt 2012 descendants of the original Punakitere settlers set about to clean-up the cemetery and preserve the few remaining headstones.
