By a series of transactions it came into the possession of RANSLEY SCOVELL, Sep. 15, 1847 (W:276) and to Mary E. Stewart, Nov. 30, 1857. The farm is located in the south-east part of Sec. 27, Palmyra, and a small tract was given by Mr. Scovell for a private burial ground. It was on the east bank of the River Raisin, near the Fayette Branch of the New York Central R. R. system, and west side of the highway. There has been no visible remains of this plot for nearly fifty years, but some of the grave stones were taken to the river for us as fishing platforms. Clara Ranger Clark, (Mrs. William H.), gave her testimony to the Compiler as to the burials in this ground. She was the dau. of Amos and Sarah Ann Gibbs Ranger, and the grand dau. of Joel Ranger and his wife, Rosana Cutter, all four of whom were Organizers of the Palmyra Presbyterian Society, and three of them buried in this place. She continued to state that Ransley Scovell was a deaf mute; that he had a brother Stephen and a sister Mary. Stephen married a Mrs. Wraight and Mary married (1) Barker Harrison, a brother of Albert J. Harrison, one of the earliest settlers of the Township; (2) Mr. Turrell; (3) Benjamin Deming. Mr. and Mrs. Deming owned and resided on this farm until their death; both buried in the Village Cemetery. Mrs. Clark could give but few dates of deaths, but she knew the names of the people interred there. She was brought up in the neighborhood and her Gibbs relations settled farther down the river shortly after 1825. The bridge at this point is still known as "Gibbss Bridge". Sarah Ann Gibbs lived to a great age and is buried at the Village. [NOTE: Apparently, Mrs. Clark or another relative procured a new headstone for Amos Ranger and had it placed at the Palmyra Village Cemetery due this cemetery's loss. I am not going to re-add that memorial here, but it should be noted that stone is a cenotaph, and Mr. Ranger's remains are here according to his daughter. Gaius Gibbs, son of Nathan, d. 1851, was buried here, and later removed to Palmyra Village. Isaac, Rachel Ann, and Lyman Purdy were all originally interred here and later removed to Palmyra Village.] The map location is approximate.
