Description	:	In 1032, King Canute granted St. Martin's Church to Abingdon Abbey, but it eventually became the town church. In 1820, the medieval church was replaced by a second church on the site. In the 1890s, the Oxford Corporation Act called for that church to be torn down and the parishoners to join All Saints Church for worship. The Carfax Tower, which was saved from destruction by the efforts of the last Rector of St Martin's, the Rev. Carteret Fletcher, survives from the original medieval church.
