Please know that what you did to preserve this little family cemetery was such a kind and good thing to do and the comment that was made to Robert Dubuisson "they were there first" tells me the Allen family has much respect for the people buried there even though they did not know them. It is of great importance that this history is preserved for future generations and the Allen family gets the credit for preserving this bit of history from the Lorraine Community, Harrison County, Mississipp, for this old pioneer family. Thank you! Notes about Vincent Stiglets Written by Bobbie Mabry Graue This information has been researched by Bobbie M. Graue and not to be used without permission. Mr. Vincent Stiglets was born in Austria according to the 1880 Census and he immigrated to America probably before 1830. He was a ships carpenter and he met and married Felicita P. Ladnier (of the Pioneer Ladnier's on the Mississippi Gulf Coast). Mr. Stiglets being a ships carpenter, more than likely built the schooners of his son Captain Joseph Marion Stiglets, who lived on Biloxi River in the Woolmarket community at Stiglets Landing. Captain Stiglets had 5 or 6 schooners that plied the waters of the Gulf of Mexico from New Orleans, Louisiana to Mobile, Alabama. The schooners were on the Biloxi River and the Tchouticabouffa River and the waterway was the fastest way for transporting goods to the markets in New Orleans and Mobile in the 1800's. Captain Joseph Marion Stiglets son of Mr. Vincent Stiglets and his family had a mercantile store at Stiglets Landing, on the Biloxi River near Woolmarket, one of two stores on the River. The other store belonged to the Richard(s) family and they owned many acres of land in the area where this cemetery is located all the way to the Biloxi River. Captain Joseph Marion Stiglets and his family are buried at Coalville Cemetery in Woolmarket. This family was a very active family in the community and even hosted picnics on the Biloxi river as well as the area being the place where people got together to do many things in the community. The Lorraine and Woolmarket Communities had very close ties from the 1800's to the present time. Many of these old pioneers married into these families and these communities were connected and intertwined by direct kinship or by marriages. These communities were very much a closed society for many years and the pioneers did not sell the land. Only after the deaths of the elders was the land sold off in both communities. These communities were very well organized, building a school and churches and running the communities without the benefit of a mayor or any form of government. Most of the elders in these two communities would meet and vote on events taking place and it was all done for the benefit of the community "For the people" and "by the People." The old pioneers of the 1800's need to be recognized and remembered and this particular family has it's place in the history of these two communities. Recently I asked a friend to survey this cemetery and to take photos and I am now able to put this on line with the information given to me from the tombstones. My thanks to Linda Broussard Davis for telling me about this little family cemetery and its approximate location with information from Tony Stiglets and to her Uncle Leo Richard who located the cemetery and M.L. Richardson who went to the cemetery to check the names and my thanks to Robert Dubuisson for going to survey and take photos which he will add to the 3 people listed in this cemetery. Without their help I would not have been able to put this very valuable information online about the Stiglets family buried in this little cemetery with no gate on Fritz creek near Lorraine Road and 1~10 on the right side of the car dealorship. The preservation of this cemetery by the Allen Family is such a worthwhile thing to do for these old pioneers and will not be forgotten. Many thanks to all of you for you concern and care.
