Description | : | Te Whakaru is actually closer to Waitangi than Owenga. One of the first cemeteries in New Zealand. When whalers from New England came in 1798, the hill was used as a lookout for whales and whaling ships. First recorded burial of a whaler here was in 1802. Many shipwrecks and unknown burials also included. |
