Description	:	This cemetery contains the remains of approximately forty unidentified Civil War soldiers who were buried within battle graves around Obion County during the Civil War. These graves were re-interred here in 1869. Two other graves are located here as well: one of a doctor from Kentucky, the other a servant. Read More	This cemetery contains the remains of approximately forty unidentified Civil War soldiers who were buried within battle graves around Obion County during the Civil War. These graves were re-interred here in 1869. Two other graves are located here as well: one of a doctor from Kentucky, the other a servant. In the middle of the cemetery is a forty-foot tall monument dedicated to the "Unknown Confederate Dead." The monument was erected in 1869. When the cemetery was established, the railroad that ran through Union City bordered the north edge of this graveyard, separating it from City View Cemetery, a cemetery on the opposite side of the tracks that had been established just a few years prior. The railroad has since been removed; however, there is now a tree line and a simple chain-link fence that marks off the cemetery. The monument was funded by local citizens, during a time of post-war trauma for the city, which was still recovering from battle. When the monument was erected, numerous memorabilia was placed inside, including a history of the monument, a Confederate rifle, and a Bible. Sadly, all of the items was removed by vandals later in the 20th century. After the cemetery had been established, it was been described as a peaceful and serene place with lingering sorrow. The entrance from the rail bed in the north consisted of "stately oak steps", followed by paths of crushed stone that divided the area into quadrants. "Natural shade" was provided from the trees planted around the cemetery. Originally, there were at least 40 wooden markers. Today, this cemetery consists of 29 concrete markers forever bare of names of the people who gave their lives. This monument was also known as the First Monument to the Confederate Dead, as is is believed to be the first monument of its type. The north entrance, oak steps, and crushed stone paths no longer exist. The cemetery is now reached by concrete steps from the south with a few historical signs nearby. Re-dedications of the monument were held in both 2009 and 2019.
