Description	:	Upton Cemetery was established in the first half of the 19th century as a slave cemetery for the Upton family who owned the surrounding land at the time. After the Civil War the land continued to be used by the local African American community for their burials until 1896 when it was discontinued. In 1938, the Work's Progress Administration reported that the cemetery covered a plot 60 x 150 ft in size. Around 1908 Depot Street and the nearby railroad track were built taking in part of the burial ground. Some of the graves were moved to the nearby Solomon Temple Baptist Church Cemetery. At the time of the WPA report there were three field stones in Upton Cemetery and approximately 27 graves without markers.
