| Description | : | In the 1830's Winchester did not have a cemetery and the graveyards of the City's churches were overcrowded and in some cases had reached their capacity to accord burials for the citizens. This site chosen was on the southern slope of West Hill with its northern boundary on St. James' Lane, then known as Barnes Lane. The land belonged to the Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral.
