Description : In 1848, Joseph Mauk and his wife Nancy Hoover Mauk purchased land in Canoe Township, and with the help of the Shields, Braughler, Tozer and Armstrong families and Methodists in the Georgeville area — where Nancy Hoover's family resided — established a Methodist Episcopal Church. Before the Mauks moved to their new home, Mrs. Mauk passed away in 1849 and was buried in the Georgeville Cemetery. In 1850, Joseph Mauk married her sister, Mary Hoover, and moved to Canoe Township.
