Born in Lisco, Neb., on June 14, 1918 to Etta and George Anderson, Fred attended Lisco schools where he graduated. He worked his way through Chadron State College, Neb., by rising early each morning to milk cows at the school diary, and by working each summer in the hay fields of Nebraska. Upon receiving his B.A. in 1940, Fred coached and taught at Cairo and Alma in Nebraska. On Dec. 30, 1941, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Marines. Before deploying to the Pacific he married Louella Lindsay of Wayne, Neb., on Aug. 29, 1942, in New Bern, N.C. After four years in the service, Fred returned to civilian life and teaching and administration. While superintendent of schools in Cairo and Cambridge, Neb., he continued his education on weekends and in summers, earning his master's degree in 1949 and his doctorate in 1959 from the University of Nebraska. During this time daughters Barbara and Lorraine were born. In 1962 Fred's family moved to South Dakota where he taught at Southern State in Springfield; in 1964 they moved to Spearfish. Fred retired in 1984 after spending 20 years with Black Hills State University as Professor of Education. For eight of those years he served as Chairman of the Division of Education and Psychology. Throughout his life Fred enjoyed outdoor sports--fishing, hunting, skiing and golfing. One great hunting trip to northwest Canada "netted" a grizzly bear. Another "sport," square dancing, provided hours of fun, exercise and many dear friends. He also remained active in church, civic, professional, social and family activities. Fred is survived by his wife Louella; daughters Barbara (Ken) Coddington of Littleton, Colo., and Lorraine and Fran Burd of Derry, Pa.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Matthew and Michele Coddington and their daughter Ella of Sonoma, Calif., Steven Coddington of Littleton, Colo., Nicole and Mark Wolfgang of Latrobe, Pa., Lindsay Burd of Derry, Pa., and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, two brothers and six sisters preceded him in death. Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
