Read More	Clayton Woodrow Cooper PIEDMONT - Clayton Woodrow Cooper, 78, Piedmont, died Sunday, Aug. 9, at Rapid City Care Center. He was born Feb. 1, 1914, in Perkins County to Frank and Mable (Beatty) Cooper. The family moved to Piedmont in 1919. He attended and graduated from Piedmont schools in 1932. After working on several area farms, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935. He later attended Black Hills Commercial College in Rapid City and began working for Tri-State Milling Company of Rapid City in 1937. He married Ina Marie Sewright of Buffalo Gap at Rapid City on Feb. 20, 1942. He served with Company G 358th Infantry of the 90th Division from 1942 to 1945. His military service included the following campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star and Arrowhead. He declined a battlefield commission and was awarded France's highest military commendation, the Croix de Guerre. He continued to work for Tri-State through its purchase by Hubbard Milling Co., retiring in 1972 as a vice president. He was employed at Black Hills Packing Co. from 1973 to 1979. He and his wife resided for a short time in Rapid City and lived in Piedmont from 1946 until his death. He was a member of the Piedmont Improvement Assoc. and served 27 years on the Piedmont Volunteer Fire Dept., being named an honorary member in 1977. He served on the Piedmont School Board from 1951 to 1961, served on the Piedmont Cemetery Board from 1976 until his death; and was a charter member of the Piedmont Senior Citizens, having assisted in raising funds to build the current center. He was a 52-year member of Rapid City Masonic Lodge No. 25, a charter member of American Legion Post 311 Piedmont, a member of Modern Woodmen of America and a member of the 90th Infantry Division Organization. Survivors include his wife, Ina Marie Cooper, Piedmont; two sons, Michael Cooper, Faribault, Minn., and Steven Cooper, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; three daughters, Kay (Mrs. David) Arnio, Spearfish, Carol (Mrs. David) Holmes, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Nancy Worth, Sturgis; five sisters, Leona Norris, Los Angeles, Calif., Geraldine (Mrs. William) Grams, Sturgis, Mary (Mrs. Adolph) Anderson and Alta (Mrs. Leonard) McVay, both of Piedmont, and Martha (Mrs. William) Patterson, Mud Butte; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale Cooper; and a son-in-law, David Holmes. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis and one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church of Piedmont, with the Rev. Randy Hogarth officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Memorials have been established to Piedmont Senior Citizens and Grace United Methodist Church.
