Alfred Flower. Rev. Wm. A. McCall and Capt. Norton, from the Harvard Air Base, conducted the service, which was attended by a large number of sympathetic friends. Rev. McCall opened the service with the reading of Scripture and two poems, "An Airman Soared Away" and "High Flight." Capt. Norton made a short but most fitting address, after which he presented the flag which had been included in the beautiful decorations, to the family of the departed young hero, "In recognition of his devotion and service to his country. Lowell Powelll sang "Abide With Me" and "I Won't Have to Cross Jordan Alone," being accompanied at the piano by Margaret Anderson of Lincoln. James Rouse sounded "Taps." The following obituary was read by Rev. McCall: Lt. Alfred J. Flower On June 24th, 1944, while stationed at Lake Charles, La., Lt. Alfred J. Flower was reported missing, when a medium bomber carrying a crew of six was lost over the Gulf of Mexico. No trace of this crew or plane has ever been found. Born in Nelson, Nebraska, Lt. Flower grew to manhood in the town of his birth. In 1939 he was graduated from the Nelson High School, where he had been an honor student and an athlete. During this period of his life he attended the Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. He next attended the University of Nebraska Teachers' College. Enlisting in the Army Air Corps in January, 1942, he was called into active service in October of the same year. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and received his Bombardier wings in April, 1944, while stationed at Victory Field, Vernon, Texas. On May 10, 1944, while home on furlough, Lt. Flower was united in marriage to Miss Jeanne Jones of Oak, Nebraska, whom he leaves to mourn his loss, as do also his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred L. Flower, his brother Dick, and sister Bonnie, grandmother, grandfather, aunts, uncles and cousins, and many friends.
