Description	:	Richard Dale Flower Sr., the son of Alice Young and Alfred Flower, was born in Nelson, Nebraska, on November 28, 1927. He passed away on January 8, 2006 in Bedford, Texas at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 9 days. Upon returning to Nelson at the close of his military service, Dick... Read More	Richard Dale Flower Sr., the son of Alice Young and Alfred Flower, was born in Nelson, Nebraska, on November 28, 1927. He passed away on January 8, 2006 in Bedford, Texas at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 9 days. Dick grew up and attended school in Nelson, graduating from Nelson High as a member of the class of 1945. In November of that same year, he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed at CINC PAC headquarters at Pearl Harbor until his discharge in 1947. Upon returning to Nelson at the close of his military service, Dick worked for Corner Farm Service and on April 6, 1948, married his childhood sweetheart, Jean Walburn. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. In 1949, Dick enrolled in the National Railroad School in Omaha. After his graduation, he began his career as a telegrapher with the Union Pacific Railroad on May 5, 1950, in North Platte. While working full time, he attended Mid Plains Vocational Technical School in North Platte, where he received his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Electronics. After a series of advancements within the company over the course of a railroad career that spanned more than 38 years, he retired in 1989 as the Manager of the Communications Department in North Platte. Upon his retirement, he fulfilled his dream of returning to Nelson where he devoted himself to preserving and improving his home town. He was a founding member of the Nelson Beautification Committee and he and Jean were active participants in many projects that improved the appearance of the town. Both Dick and Jean worked diligently to clear vegetation from the old cemetery sidewalk, so that it could be used again. They were both extremely proud of the part they played in the two year process that resulted in the appointment of the original elevated cemetery sidewalk to the National Register of Historic Places. While in North Platte, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America and helped coach several baseball teams. He was on the board of directors of the North Platte Union Pacific Employees Credit Union for 29 years and was an active member of both the Union Pacific Railroad Junior Old Timers and Old Timers Clubs. He was a member of the Nelson American Legion Post 187, the Elks Lodge 2197, the Order of the Masons AM & FM, and the Tehama Shrine. Preceding him in death were his parents Alice and Alfred "Rusty" Flower; brother Alfred Jr.; infant son John Patrick; infant granddaughter Susan Hansen; and grandson Jack Flower. He is survived by Jean, his wife of nearly 58 years; son Richard Jr. and wife Jane and their family of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter Deborah and husband Don Hansen and their family of North Platte; and son Steven and wife Bonnie and their family of North Richland Hills, TX. He is also survived by his sister Bonnie and husband Les of Nelson, Nebraska along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, NE with Rev. Dr. Stephen Berry officiating. Richard Flower Jr. provided the eulogy. Music was two congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art" and "Softly and Tenderly" and,"Sunrise, Sunset" and "Old Man River" sung by Tom Jensen and a duet sung by granddaughters, Laura Flower and Sarah Delacy "Always" with Carlita Erickson as organist. Pallbearers were Will Flower, Joe Flower, Brian Hansen, Paul Hansen, Chad Stowe and Chris Stowe. Masonic Rites were conducted by the Masonic Lodge Nelson #77 AF & AM. Interment with full military rites was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Parkinson's Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
