DACOSTA, LONG RESIDENT OF GAINESVILLE DEAD Funeral Services for Respected citizen to be Held at Home on East Main Street at 3 This Afternoon. (By W. P. Arnold) Judge Aaron J. DaCosta died at 4 ‘clock Wednesday morning. The end was peaceful and life ebbed away while he slept. An aged man, he sustained and soothed an unfaltering trust and passed on to the great hereafter “like one who wraps the draperies of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.” The angel of death forced his way into the house after waiting on the doorsteps only a few minutes—an attack of apoplexy bringing about the end. Aaron DaCosta was born near Savannah, Georgia, September 1, 1849. At the age of six years he moved with his parents to Jacksonville where he was educated in the Public schools of this city. Early in 1872 he moved to Gainesville and in June 1875, married Miss Annabell Wilson of this city. The couple would have celebrated their Golden Anniversary of their marriage on the 29 of this year, had Mr. DaCosta lived. The deceased had held public office in this county for many years, being first elected Tax Assessor which place he held for 12 years. He later was appointed United States Commissioner for this district, and held that place when he died. Judge DaCosta was a large property holder of this county and a civil engineer of wide note having done much of this kind of work in connection with his other duties. He was an active member of the Methodist Church and a Mason. His friends not only live in Gainesville and Alachua County, but in the South at large, are numbered by the thousands and the news of his death will come as a district shock to all who had known him. Judge DaCosta is survived by his wife, two sons, Aaron M. and Alpheus DaCosta of Gainesville, and four daughters, Miss Annie and Miss Nell DaCosta, and Mrs. O. T. Stone, of Gainesville, and Mrs. Norris McSlya of Miami; also one sister, Mrs. M. D. Muckenfuss of Jacksonville. Funeral services will be from the residence 807 East Main Street, North, this afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. W. A. Cooper, Pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Dr. George S. Waldo will render a solo. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. Those asked to act as pallbearers, active, are: Robert E. Davis, T. R. Pickett, M. H. Baxley, E. L. Johnson, Evans Haile, George F. Mason, T. B. Ellis, Jr., H. L. Hutchinson. Honorary: Dr. M. H. DePass, W. S. Campbell, S. H. Wienges, Col. E. C. F. Sanchez, Dr. T. F. Thomas, Robert W. Davies, M. S. Cheves, P. G. Ramsey, L. W. Fennell, George R. Ellis, Major John W. Tench, L. N. Parrish, L. J. Burkhim, Col. E. S. Walker, George Smith. Col. Davis Pays Tribute Col. Robert W. Davis, former editor of the Sun and many years friend of Judge DaCosta, last night paid the following beautiful tribute to the dead man. When, in the silent hours of yesterday morning, the Angel of Death closed down the eyelids of A. J. DaCosta in the dreamless and everlasting sleep, a noble citizen of Gainesville passed to his reward. And if a blameless life of honest endeavor and absolute fidelity to every trust entitles a man to wear a crown in the bright land to which John DaCosta has gone, his crown will be filled with diadems. For more than 40 years I have known and loved this unpretentious man. I have known him in relations of husband, father, brother, and friend. If he ever betrayed a trust or shirked a duty I never heard of it. In every walk of life and at every point contact with his fellowman he was always the same trustworthy, straightforward and guideless man. There was no deception in his character and no hypocrisy in his nature. It is said that all the world is but a stage and the men and women in it are but actors. If this is true, then A. J. DaCosta played well his part. He did not rant. He did not play in the gallery. He did not seek applause. Now that the curtain has fallen, all his loved ones and all his friends may be comforted with the thought that he played his part conscientiously and well. In another column of this paper a brief sketch of his life of Judge DaCosta is given. He loved Florida with singular devotion and when, today he is laid to rest in its bosom his spirit will rejoice that his sacred dust shall forever mingle with the soil he loved so well. He had been one of the upbuilders of Gainesville and of Florida and it is well that he should sleep near the scenes where his life was spent.
