Obituary: The Mapleton Press, 14 January 1965: Aaron Wesley Coon was born October 21, 1881, in Remington, Indiana, and died suddenly at the farm home of his stepson, Clark Mead, northwest of Smithland on Tuesday, January 5, 1965, at the age of 83. Mr. Coon lived in Oto, Anthon, and Smithland areas over 50 years. He married Mrs. Lillie Mead May 3, 1925, at Elk Point, South Dakota, and they lived in the Smithland community. Survivors include the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Ada Ervln, Mrs. Lucille Dennis and Mrs. Lela Martin, all of Gardena, California; four sons, Clifford of Sioux City; Leo of Gold Beach, Oregon; Arthur of Cedar Rapids and John of Smithland, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gladys Briggs of Sebastopol, California, four stepsons, Miner Mead of Linn Grove; John, Clark and Lawrence Mead of Hornick; 38 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. John Pierce and Mrs. Ival Hayworth of Sioux City; Mrs. Mabel Beeson of Washta; Mrs. Tom Hayworth of Anthon arid Mrs. Florence Smith of Correctionville; two brothers, Albert of Chicago, and Ray of Sioux City. Services were held Friday afternoon, Jan. 8 at the Methodist church in Smithland with Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Pallbearers were Earl Hines, Lew Gallup, Paul Maynard, Kenneth Johnston, Earl Christman and John Mack Sr. Burial was in the Smithland cemetery under the direction of the Willman funeral home.
